Grattan Elementary is a small vibrant K-5 public school located in the Cole Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. We offer a solid, structured program with an emphasis on developing basic skills, supplemented with extra programs in arts and sciences.

Our school believes in a balanced approach to the development of the whole child. We foster critical thinking skills, nurture social and emotional growth, encourage respect for self and others, and inspire a lifelong love of learning.

We are piloting a strong Family Diversity Curriculum that promotes welcoming unique family structures of all shapes and sizes, please click here to learn more. We implement anti-bullying and conflict management curriculum for all students.

Community-building activities are an integral part of Grattan School, with frequent family events such as barbecues and evening assemblies. We host fund-raisers throughout the year like our annual film festival and family fun festival, the proceeds contribute to the school’s enrichment programs.

Grattan has a state of the art technology lab that is maintained by a trained, full-time Paraprofessional. All students have weekly access to the lab and work on educational projects and publishing applications as well as software applications including Mavis Beacon, Rosetta Stone, Final Cut Pro, Kid Pix and more. A newly renovated library provides a special place for the children to expand their skills and imagination.

We are proud of our award winning, innovative composting and recycling programs. All students participate in gardening activities that promote earth friendly practices that will last a lifetime. We have several gardening spaces including “an outdoor classroom” on our campus. We dig, we plant and we nurture our seedlings. We even cook and eat the food that we grow.

All students fully engage in a strong year-long choral music program with consultant Ms. Jayne. There are two performances each year: a Holiday Sing a Long and a Spring Vocal Music Concert. All students also participate in a semester long dance program. We partner with Young Imaginations Dance Instructors to teach our children multi-cultural dance routines with a culminating school-wide assembly where students perform in celebration of all the folks who volunteer and serve as “boosters” to Grattan School throughout the school year.

Grattan’s parent participation has surged in the past few years. Parents are welcome and encouraged to volunteer in many different capacities including volunteering in the library, classroom, gardens, motor classes, on field trips and during the lunch hour. Grattan has been recognized by the San Francisco School volunteer program and has received several awards over the past few years. Our fundraising efforts have streamlined and become highly efficient. Our PTA supports many enrichment programs including funding our Garden Coordinator, Mural Artists, Choral Music Consultants, Storyteller, Afterschool clubs and so much more! We have several committees that work towards building our comprehensive program including; the Green Schoolyard, Fundraising, Science, Afterschool Enrichment, Murals and so much more.
