Subject: Budget Update

Dear Colleagues:

Today we received word that we will be given between $18 and $19 million from the city's rainy day fund. This is very good news.

We appreciate the city helping us in this fiscal crisis. We thank Mayor Newsom and the Supervisors for believing in our teachers and, above all, in our children.

We're not out of the woods yet. Even after this generous funding from the city, we still face a $13 million hole in our budget. We continue to make cuts in the budget to bridge that gap. The state will be giving us a revised budget in mid May, and the rainy day fund amount may be revised, depending on what the state's new budget looks like.

With the good news we received today, we will do our best to rescind most, if not all, our teachers' layoff notices as soon as possible. We want to make sure we restore more of the schools' budgets to give Site Councils the opportunity to make our employees the top priority by reinstituting as many positions as possible. We are working toward completely restoring the school sites' budgets, and I will keep you posted on any new developments.

Thank you all for being so patient and understanding through these difficult times.

Sincerely,

Carlos A. Garcia
